Golf Cart Battery Maintenance - Serving Your Golf Cart Battery

How to Service Golf Cart Batteries

Frequent battery maintenance will save you money in the long run and also keep you from being stranded.  Follow these simple rules and you will be well on your way to long battery life.

• Maintain the water levels of each cell of each battery to 1/4 of an inch above the plates with DISTILLED WATER.  Do not allow the plates inside the batteries to be exposed to air.  Water should only be added AFTER fully charging the batteries.

• Charge your batteries often.  When not using the cart, charge your batteries.  If your cart has sat for more than 10 days, charge your batteries.  If it has been plugged up to the charger during these 10 days, unplug the charger from the cart side and reconnect it to the charger again to start the charging process.

• Inspect batteries once a month for loose cable connections, corrosion, and dirt.  Clean and tighten as necessary.

• DO NOT let your batteries run to empty where the cart will not move.  This kills the batteries and does irreversible damage.

• DO NOT let the cart sit for extended amounts of time.  This causes sulfating of the battery, and causes permanent damage to the battery.

• NEW batteries are only at 70% of their full potential.  Proper break in of a new battery pack is necessary to ensure long life and full potential.  Never run a new battery pack below 50% of its pack voltage.  It will take 15 to 20 COMPLETE charge cycles to reach full potential of your new batteries.  To ensure you do not exceed 50%, take time to charge your batteries after each use until the charger shuts off on its own.
