Electric Golf Cart Charging and Battery Maintenance for New Owners

Golf Cart Battery Charging

Cars should be plugged in at ALL times, when not in use. This includes cars that are out of use. Cars that are not plugged in can self-discharge over several weeks and virtually “kill” the battery pack.

 

Connect your battery charger to a readily available surge protector outlet/strip. Since the charger should be plugged in at all times, it is wise to protect it against lightening.

 

Batteries should be charged after EACH period of use, no matter how short you used it. When plugging charger into car, verify that the ammeter needle moves to the right side of the meter window. This confirms that there is power to the car and a working charger.

 

Allow the charger to complete the charge process by letting the charging system turn off on its own (the charger will be silent and the ammeter needle will be at zero).

 

Short charging will promote unbalanced batteries and costly battery replacement.

 

Lead acid batteries do not develop a memory and do not need to be fully discharged before recharging (there is no hysteresis effect for these batteries).

 

Check water level monthly for every battery and every cell. Note that the cells within a battery are totally separate cavities, so filling one cell does not fill the adjacent cells. In the event of having single-point watering system, water levels should still be checked every month to ensure the system is working properly.

 

USE DISTILLED WATER ONLY. DO NOT USE TAP WATER.

 

Watering should always be done AFTER fully charging the battery.

Battery Operation/Cleaning

Shallow discharges will result in a longer battery life.

 

50% (or less) discharges are recommended, 80% discharge is the maximum safe discharge.

 

Poor periodic maintenance can contribute to battery discharge. Poor battery cable contact due to improper torque can create high resistance connections that will increase amperage and reduce run times. Battery cables should be torqued to 110 INCH pounds, using a ½ inch click wrench. This should be checked every 6 months.

 

Dirty and corroded terminals will lead to improper connections. Use battery corrosion prevention spray once per month. Use baking soda/water mix to clean corrosion from terminals, if present.

 

Low tire pressure, brake drag, and improperly aligned tires can also contribute to battery discharge. Please check alignment and tire pressure monthly.
 

Tire Pressure

Please note that when cart tires are low on air pressure, they do not appear “flat” like car tires. You must use a pressure gage to insure that the tires area properly inflated

 

Use caution when inflating tires. Due to the low volume of the small tires, over-inflation can occur quickly.

 

Tire pressure should be maintained between 18-22 PSI. All four tires should have the same pressure for optimum handling.

 

Under inflated tires (<15 psi) will cause excess tire wear (outside edges of tires), hard steering, and adds stress to drive motor and batteries – reduces battery life!

 

Over inflated tires (>22 psi) will cause excess tire wear (center of tire).
 

Battery Maintenance-Daily

Charge the batteries after each day’s use. The charger will automatically shut off when batteries are completely charged Inspect car and charger for proper operating conditions. Ensure that ammeter both clicks and moves on the charger, when plugged into car. Verify charge has been completed, meaning charger has turned itself off, before using vehicle.
 

Battery Maintenance-Monthly

Inspect all wiring for fraying, loose connections, corrosion, or deterioration of insulation. Water batteries using distilled water container. Very important! Watering should always be done AFTER fully charging the battery. Clean the batteries and wire terminals using mix of baking soda and water. Coat terminals with protectant spray you can get at any auto store.
 

Battery Maintenance-Every 6 months

Battery cables should be torqued to 110 INCH POUNDS, using a ½ inch click wrench. This should be checked every 6 months. Poor periodic maintenance can contribute to battery discharge. How to Maintain Your Club Car Gasoline-Powered Precedent Golf Car

Practice regular preventive maintenance to preserve the life of your vehicle.

Your gasoline-powered Precedent golf car is designed and built to provide years of trouble free service and hours of fun. But it’s important to maintain it properly by following the guidelines in your owner’s manual. Here’s an overview of those guidelines.

Gas and Oil

 Use only regular grade unleaded (87 octane) for your gas golf cart. Never use fuel that contains more than 10 percent ethanol.
 Make sure the gasoline tank cap is securely tightened after each refill. Keep the area around the fuel cap clean and free of grass clippings and other debris that could fall into the tank.
 Change your engine oil and filter after the first 100 hours of operation, then after each additional 200 hours of operation or annually, whichever comes first.

Monthly Service

To further protect your investment, perform the following tasks once each month or have your local Authorized Club Car Dealer perform them:
 Check the engine oil level and change the oil, if necessary.
 Check the engine cooling air intake and clean, if necessary.
 Check the air pressure in your tires and adjust, if needed.
 Wash the engine compartment and the underside of your vehicle with a garden hose. Do not wash the engine while it is hot, as this could result in damage.
 Wash your vehicle and clean the upholstery, if needed, following the directions in your owner’s manual.

Semi-annual Service

Inspect your vehicle and perform preventive maintenance on it every six months, every 50 hours of operation. During these inspections, you or a trained Club Car service technician should check and lubricate the shifter cable pivots, the two fittings in the front suspension, and the brake system as outlined in your owner’s manual. In addition, have a trained technician perform the following inspections and maintenance every six months:

Check the battery and its electrolyte level. The technician should clean the terminals, wash dirt from the casing and apply Battery Terminal Protector Spray.

 Check the front wheel alignment, camber and toe-in and adjust, if necessary. Proper toe-in ensures that the front wheels are pointing slightly inward to reduce wear.
 Inspect all electrical wiring and connections for tightness and damage. Replace if needed.
 Check and lubricate the brakes.

Annual Maintenance

Have your vehicle serviced by a trained technician annually or every 100 hours of operation.

How to Maintain Your Club Car Electric Precedent Golf Car

Practice regular preventive maintenance to preserve the life of your vehicle.

Your Club Car electric Precedent golf car is designed and built to deliver years of worry-free driving pleasure. To keep your vehicle in good working condition and preserve its life, practice regular preventive maintenance.

Don’t Neglect the Batteries

Take the following steps to avoid damage and maximize the life of your batteries:
 Charge the batteries after each use. Never leave batteries discharged overnight or longer than absolutely necessary.
 If your vehicle is not equipped with the single-point watering system, check your electrolyte level weekly and add water if needed.
 If your vehicle is equipped with the single point watering system, water the batteries monthly or according to the watering interval you’ve established, following the instructions in your owner’s manual.
 Charge the batteries before adding water, unless the electrolyte level is below the top of the plates. In that case, add just enough water to cover the plates. Then charge the batteries and check the level again. Never charge the batteries when the plates are exposed above the electrolyte level. To maximize the life of your batteries, add only distilled water. Do not overfill the batteries. Fully tighten the battery caps to prevent electrolyte leakage.
 Make sure the battery hold-downs are tight enough so that the batteries do not move while the vehicle is in motion. Do not over tighten, as this can cause the battery case to crack or buckle. Inspect the terminal connections regularly to ensure that they are clean and tight. Replace any worn insulation or frayed wires.
 Keep the batteries clean and free of corrosion by washing the tops and terminals monthly. Use a solution of one cup baking soda per one gallon of water. Do not allow the solution to enter the batteries. Thoroughly rinse the solution off the batteries. Fully tighten the battery terminals. Let the terminals dry, then coat them with Battery Terminal Protector Spray, which is available from your local Authorized Club Car Dealer. Properly dispose of waste water.

Semi-annual Maintenance
You’ll also need to perform regular maintenance on your Club Car Precedent every six months or every 50 hours of operation.
This is the time to:
 Check the pressure in your tires and adjust, if necessary.
 Have a trained technician inspect your vehicle’s brake system, electrical system, front wheel alignment, camber and toe-in. Proper toe-in ensures that the front wheels are pointing slightly inward to reduce wear.
 Lubricate or have a trained service technician lubricate your charger receptacle, brake system and front suspension.
 If you have a single-point watering system, manually check or have a trained Club Car service technician check the electrolyte levels on all battery cells to verify correct valve operation.

Annual Maintenance

Have a trained Club Car service technician check your transaxle and pedal group assembly and lubricate as needed annually or every 100 hours of operation.

How to Install Golf Cart Lift Kit | Club Car Precedent

Instructions

Front Lift Installation

·        Raise the front of the golf cart with a jack and place jack stands on each side of the front end.

·        Use a socket to loosen loosed the lug nuts on the front end and remove the both front wheels.

·        Loosen and remove the tie rods.

·        Use a socket to loosen bolts on factory spindles and remove the factory spindles.

·        Install the new spindles and replace the tie rods and wheel hubs in the same place they were removed from.

·        Be sure to relubricate all joints to avoid squeeks after installed.

·        Adjust the wheel alignment as instructed by golf cart lift kit instructions.

Rear Lift Installation

·        Raise the rear end of the golf cart with a jack and use the jack stands to support the rear end.

·        Remove bolts on the bottom of the shocks where they attach to the axle.

·        Remove the ground straps from starter if it is gas.

·        Use the jack to support the axle and remove U-bolts on one side of the golf cart that were installed by the factory. Remove the leaf spring.

·        Reinstall the leaf spring from the bottom of the axle to the top of the axle. Place the axle lift blocks on top of the the axel between the leaf springs and the axle and replace the factory U-bolts with the new longer U-bolts. Tighten all bolts on that side of the golf cart.

·        Repeat procedures for the opposite side of the axle and tighten all bolts.

·        Install the shocks to the U-bolt plates and tighten.

Tire Installation

·        If you have installed a six inch lift kit with the original leaf springs you will be able to add tires that are 22x11x10 or 22x11x12.

·        If you have installed a six inch lift kit with heavy duty leaf springs you will be able to add tires that are 23x11x10 or 23x11x12.
